Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It caused by the immune system dysfunction. Cells invade the brain, destroys the myelin sheath of nerve fibers and lead to scarring. At this nerve tissue is replaced by connective one.

Do not confuse the multiple sclerosis with senile disease, which we used to call simply "sclerosis". "Multiple" means that the disease foci are located throughout the nervous system. And the word "sclerosis" is used to describe the nature of the violations.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects young people. Unlike other neurological diseases that occur more frequently in elderly, MS occurs between 15 and 40 years. There are cases when the MS was detected in two year-old children. But after 50 the risk of developing this disease decreases dramatically. MS is quite common, it ranks second as for the of young people neurological disability. On average, 20–30 cases of the disease per 100 thousand of population are diagnosed.

There is an interesting geographical pattern: the farther from the equator, the higher the percentage of incidence. People in northern regions suffer more often (70 per 100,000). It’s attributed to insufficient amounts of vitamin D, which is produced in human body when exposed to sunlight. While women suffer 2–3 times more often than men they carry the disease much easier. MS doesn’t affect the lifespan.

There is racial connection as well. The Japanese, Chinese and Koreans do not suffer at all. But that cannot be said about the Europeans, who suffer the most. In large cities, the percentage of cases is several times higher than in rural areas. These facts indicate that the environment factors may affect the occurrence of the disease.

It should be noted that myelin sheath has the ability to recover independently or under the influence of drugs. Therefore, those patients whom recovery processes run faster than the plaques formation, may have weak and very rare exacerbations.

The best way to deal with multiple sclerosis is a mesenchymal stem cell therapy. If you still have not heard anything about stem cell therapy, we strongly recommend you to read this article until the end. Looking ahead, we note that therapy with mesenchymal stem cells involves the patient's own stem cells use. Despite the fact that this method is new, its’ excellent results has already proven the one’s high efficiency. Day by day the number of people who want to fight with multiple sclerosis using stem cells therapy increase.

Multiple sclerosis disease symptoms

The disease develops gradually. In the early stages, it does not manifest itself, because healthy brain cells take over the function of the affected areas. The earliest symptoms appear when more than 50% of nerve fibers are already hit. At this stage of the disease such complaints arise:

  • One or bilateral visual impairment.
  • Pain and diplopia.
  • Numbness and fingers tingling.
  • Reduced skin sensitivity.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Dystaxia.

Symptoms can be very different even considering the one person. They can come and go or be replaced by others. Over time, as a result of increasing the amount of atherosclerotic plaque, there are other signs of disease:

  • Spasms and muscle pain.
  • Urinary retention and constipation.
  • Sexual life changes.
  • The appearance of pathological pyramid reflexes which does not happen with healthy people. They can be detected by the neurologist only.
  • Increased fatigue during physical activities.
  • Partial paralysis of the limbs, shortness of voluntary movements.
  • Paralysis of cranial nerves: trigeminal, facial, hypoglossal.
  • Eyeballs’ rhythmic oscillations.
  • Behavior change and intelligence decrease.
  • Neuroses, emotional instability, alternating depression and euphoria.

Patient’s condition may temporarily worsen after taking a hot bath, staying in the hot room, and during fever. It is necessary to avoid overheating, which can trigger an attack. Course of the disease is characterized by exacerbation and remission periods. Correctly chosen treatment can significantly reduce the duration of exacerbation period and extend the period of relative health.

There are 4 types of the disease:

  • Remitting-relapsing (the most frequent). Periods of exacerbation followed by periods of partial or complete recovery. There is no symptoms’ progression between exacerbations.
  • Secondary-progressive. Remitting-relapsing disease course is often replaced by secondary progression with or without exacerbations.
  • Primary progressive. Symptoms progressing from the onset on the disease, slight improvement occasionally possible.
  • Progressive peaking. Obvious exacerbations development along with slow progression.

The disease consequences

In 25% of cases the disease is benign. Patients keep working for many years and can independently take care of themselves. In other cases (10%) invalidism occurs within 5 years after the detection of the disease.

Multiple sclerosis runs more easily and has long periods of remission if it began at an early. The first symptom is visual impairment. The course of the disease is individual for each patient, but with right multiple sclerosis treatment, person could at least maintain mental and physical health.
